At this time, December 2010, AMD Phenom II N870 is the fastest mobile microprocessor with three cores. The processor is based on enhanced K10 microarchitecture, and combines 4 cores (one of them is disabled), and DDR3-capable memory controller on one die. The N870 operates at 2.3 GHz, or 100 MHz and 200 MHz faster than earlier N850 and N830 models from the same family. The triple-core Phenom II employs two-level cache architecture, where each CPU core includes 128 KB level 1 and 512 KB level 2 caches. Being a high-performance microprocessor, the N870 includes all features that can be found in other Phenom II models:

  • Accommodates full 128-bit Floating Point Unit, which results in better SSE performance
  • Has increased memory bandwidth due to faster DDR3-1333 memory support. This ultimately translates into higher performance in memory-intensive applications.
  • AMD64 instruction set extension allows this CPU to run 64-bit operating systems.
  • Enhanced Virus Protection prevents computer virus infections by blocking certain types of exploits.
  • Virtualization technology speeds up execution of user and system software in virtual environments.

AMD Phenom II N870 CPU contains PowerNow! technology, as well as several other low-power features, which, combined with processor's low frequency and presumably low core voltage, helps this model to achieve 35 Watt power rating. The Phenom II N870 is manufactured in 638-pin micro-PGA package, that requires socket S1. The processor fits all variations of socket S1, but works only in S1g4 revision of the socket.

Common perception "the most expensive processor performs the best", which more often than not works for desktop CPUs, is not true for mobile AMD microprocessors. While triple-core N870 will outrun dual-core Phenom II or Turion II counterparts in multi-threaded applications, they will not be as good in single- and dual-threaded tasks, and you may end up not just wasting your money, but also getting worse performance. Therefore, be careful when choosing this processor for new laptop, or as an upgrade CPU for existing laptop. An easy way to determine, whether the Phenom II X3 will work for you or not, is to run your favorite applications on a multi-core computer, and watch closely CPU usage for all cores. The Phenom II N870 should be good if the system frequently uses more than two cores.

Dec 16, 2010: Yesterday we published a story revealing not-yet officially released Phenom II Triple-Core N870 microprocessor in Dell Inspiron M501R notebook. We suspected that that processor would be a part of future refresh of AMD mainstream "Danube" platform. Today we found more mobile processors from the upcoming refresh. Hewlett Packard recently updated "Maintenance and Service Guide" for Compaq Presario CQ42 and HP G42 notebooks, and added unannounced AMD model numbers and their brief specifications.

Dec 15, 2010: As the launch of Intel mobile Sandy Bridge microprocessors is getting imminent, we expect that AMD will respond to it with new versions of their low-power and mainstream mobile processors. Earlier this week we published two stories covering new models from AMD Ultrathin 2010 platform, Athlon II Neo K145, and Turion II Neo K645 and K685. AMD mainstream 2010 platform is getting refreshed too, and one of the new processors for that platform is a triple-core Phenom II N870.

Top view. Stepping code is NADIC AD. The processor was manufactured in the second half of September 2010. Package number (the number in the upper right corner) is 30605, which is standard for Phenom II triple- and quad-core CPUs.
